Why hire an inspector that is ASHI or NACHI Certified?

The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), founded in 1976, is the oldest and largest professional society of home inspectors in North America.  ASHI’s goals have always been to build customer awareness of the importance of a quality home inspection and enhance the professionalism of home inspectors.

The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (NACHI) is the world’s most elite, non-profit inspection association.  Our home buying clients enjoy the high experience level only  InterNACHI certified inspectors can provide.  Our inspectors have successfully passed InterNACHI’s inspectors examination, taken the Standards of Practice Quiz, completed a Code of Ethics Course, adhere to the Standards of Practice, abide by the Code of Ethics, attend required continuing education courses, and are InterNACHI certified.

Whether you’re a home buyer, seller, real estate professional, you’ll recognize the value of working with an ASHI & InterNACHI certified home inspector.  These certified home inspectors stand out as models of professionalism and provide superior customer service.

    What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas which has always been part of our environment.  It’s a natural decay product of uranium and is found in soil everywhere in varying concentrations.  The NJ DEP and the US EPA have found that Radon can be an unwelcomed part of our home environment.  Radon gas can accumulate in enclosed places such as a house, but its presence, even in high concentrations, cannot be detected by human senses becasue the gas is invisible and has no odor.  Long term or chronic exposure to Radon has been linked to lung cancer.  The greater the concentration and the longer the person is exposed, the greater the risk, so all people are encouraged to reduce their exposure.  However, becasue of its physical characteristics, the only way to detect the presence of Radon gas and measure the level is by a test.  So people wanting to limit their exposure must first conduct a test to determine what their exposure levels are.  Lung cancer is the only known health effect linked to Radon exposure at this time.  The EPA estimates that between 15,000 and 22,000 of the 125,000 annual deaths from lung cancer each year may be attributed to Radon exposure.  In New Jersey, of the annual 4,700 lung cancer deaths, as many as 140 – 250 may be associated with Radon exposure.  For more information on RADON visit:  www.nj.gov/dep/rpp/radon/radoninfo.htm

Why should my home be evaluated for Radon?

Testing your home for Radon is easy and homes with high levels of Radon can be fixed (mitigated).  The New Jersey DEP recommends that ALL homes be tested for Radon on an annual basis.

Why should I have my home evaluated for Wood Destroying Insects and Termites?

A wood destroying insect (WDI) inspection is a process that provides information to prospective buyers and lenders regarding the condition of a home relative to wood destroying insect or organism infestations and damage.  Fortress Home Inspections is qualified to perform WDI inspections.  A WDI inspection covers visually accessible areas of the home and includes an inspection for termites and other wood destroying insects.  Additionally, the inspector will point out conditions that could lead to a new termite infestation, or support an existing infestation, including firewood and other debris stored against the home, wood siding contact with the soil, and grade that does not slope away from the foundation.  Other potental concerns may include mulching materials, landscape timbers and deteriorated wood in the home’s vicinity.  Fortress Home Inspections performs  a WDI inspection in the readily accessible areas of the structure and inspects for visual evidence of wood destroying insects (like termites).  The findings are reported to the purchaser in the WDI report.

    * The satisfaction guaranty is with regards to the physical inspection, not the report.  The guaranty is not a warranty.  The satisfaction guaranty does not express that the home will not or does not have any defects at the time of inspection or any time after the inspection has been completed.  The satisisfaction guaranty simply is that for any reason the client is not satisfied with regards to how the physical inspection is being conducted (at the time of the inspection), a 100% refund will be given (less a time/travel surchage of $75.00).
